🚀 Getting started with eSIM

What is an eSIM?+

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic SIM card, you just scan a QR code to install a data plan — no store visit, no swapping trays. You can keep several eSIMs on your phone and switch between them.

Who is a TripWise eSIM for?+

Anyone with an eSIM-capable phone who is travelling, on business, or studying abroad. You keep your main number (for OTPs and calls home) and use the eSIM for data abroad — no physical SIM, no expensive roaming fees.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?+

Go to Settings > General > About (or Settings > Mobile Data) and look for 'eSIM' or 'SIM status'. On iPhone you can dial *#06# and check for an EID line. Most iPhones from XS (2018), Samsung from Galaxy S20 and Google Pixel from the 3rd generation support it. You can also use our compatibility checker at the bottom of this page.

My phone supports eSIM — could it still be locked?+

Possibly. Phones bought in some markets (especially carrier-locked models) may be eSIM- or network-locked. If your phone is unlocked (accepts SIMs from any carrier), the eSIM will work normally.

How far ahead should I buy my eSIM?+

You can buy any time, even minutes before boarding. Still, we recommend buying and installing it (without activating) at least a day ahead, so you have time to sort out any technical issues.

📶 Installing & activating your eSIM

How do I receive my eSIM after buying?+

Right after a successful payment, your QR code appears on screen and is emailed with your order confirmation, along with the SM-DP+ address and activation code for manual entry if needed.

How to install the eSIM on iPhone (iOS)+

Go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Scan the QR you received and follow the on-screen steps. Once installed, turn on 'Turn On This Line' for the eSIM and enable Data Roaming when you arrive. If you can't scan the QR, choose 'Enter Details Manually' and use the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email.

How to install the eSIM on Android (Samsung, Pixel...)+

Go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add mobile plan > Scan carrier QR code. On Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add eSIM. After installing, turn on mobile data for the eSIM and set it as the default mobile data line when you need it.

Should I activate at purchase or wait until I arrive?+

INSTALL it (scan the QR) before you fly, but only ENABLE Data Roaming once you're in the destination country — most eSIM plans start counting validity from the first connection to the partner network there.

Do I need to set up an APN?+

In most cases the eSIM configures the APN automatically, so you don't need to do anything. If you have signal but no data, go to the eSIM settings > Mobile Data Network > APN and enter the APN value listed in your plan email/guide.

I installed it but have no signal — why?+

Check: (1) Mobile Data and Data Roaming are on for the eSIM, (2) the eSIM is set as the primary data line, (3) restart your phone or toggle airplane mode, (4) make sure you're within coverage of the country you bought, (5) pick a carrier manually under Settings > Network Selection if automatic doesn't connect.

📊 Using & managing eSIMs

When does my eSIM data plan expire?+

Each plan has its own validity (e.g. 7, 15, 30 days), shown when you buy. Validity usually starts from the first time the eSIM connects to a network in the destination — not from purchase. A plan stops working when the data runs out OR the days expire, whichever comes first.

How do I check my remaining data?+

Many plans let you check right on the device: on iPhone at Settings > Mobile Data > select the eSIM to see usage; on Android at Settings > Network & Internet > Data usage. Note the device figure can differ slightly from the carrier's. You can also contact support with your order number to check.

Can I top up / add more data?+

Yes. When you're running low, return to TripWise and buy another plan for the same country/region any time (as long as you have internet). You'll get a new eSIM to install — quick and simple.

Will I still receive calls/texts on my main number?+

Yes. A TripWise travel eSIM is for DATA only. You keep your main SIM/number in the phone to receive calls, texts and OTP codes as usual — just turn off Data Roaming on your main SIM to avoid roaming charges, and use the eSIM for internet.

Can I share a hotspot from the eSIM?+

Yes, most eSIM plans allow tethering (Personal Hotspot) for your laptop or other devices, except a few plans that note a restriction. Keep in mind this uses up data faster.

Can one eSIM work in multiple countries?+

Yes — if you buy a REGIONAL plan (e.g. Europe, Southeast Asia) or a GLOBAL plan, one eSIM works across every country in that plan's coverage list. A single-country plan works only in that country.

Do WhatsApp, video calls and messaging apps work?+

Yes. Because you have an internet data connection, all internet-based messaging/calling apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, FaceTime, Google Meet…) work normally.

💳 Payment & promotions

What payment methods does TripWise eSIM accept?+

Local ATM cards, Visa, Mastercard, e-wallets/QR and PayPal, right on the website. International customers can pay in USD via PayPal.

If I pay by bank transfer, how soon do I get my eSIM?+

For bank transfer, once we receive your payment you'll get a confirmation and your eSIM within one business day at most. Other online payment methods issue the eSIM almost instantly.

How do I use a promo code?+

At the cart/checkout step, enter your code in the 'Promo code' field and press Apply. Some offers are suggested automatically in your cart. The discount is deducted from your total before you confirm payment.

Is my payment secure?+

Yes. All transactions are handled by certified partner payment gateways, and TripWise eSIM never stores your card details.

Can I get a refund?+

Because eSIMs are issued almost instantly after payment, refunds aren't available once installed/activated. If a technical fault makes the eSIM unusable, please contact support and we'll help (re-issue or refund depending on the case).

Will I get an invoice?+

Your order confirmation email acts as a receipt with full plan and amount details. If you need a VAT invoice for a business, please contact support with your order number.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

I ran out of data mid-trip — what do I do?+

Return to TripWise eSIM and buy another plan for the same country/region any time, as long as you have internet (Wi-Fi or your current eSIM with data left).

I didn't receive the email with my QR code+

Check your Spam/Promotions folder. If it's still missing, sign in and open 'My orders' to view the QR again, or contact support with your order number — we'll resend it right away.

The QR code says 'already used' or won't reinstall+

Each eSIM QR can be installed only ONCE on ONE device. If you already installed it elsewhere, or deleted the eSIM and tried to reinstall, it usually can't be reused — contact support with your order number to have it re-issued. So don't delete the eSIM from your phone until you're sure you no longer need it.

I've arrived but the eSIM won't connect+

Check in order: enable Data Roaming for the eSIM → restart your phone → go to Settings > Network Selection, turn off automatic and manually pick a carrier from the list → verify the APN matches the guide. If it still fails, contact support with your order number.

Speeds are slower than expected+

Speed depends on the partner network in each area and local congestion. Try restarting your phone, toggling airplane mode to refresh the connection, or manually switching to another carrier. In 5G areas, make sure 5G is enabled on your phone if the plan supports it.

My phone shows 'No SIM' or the eSIM disappeared+

Restart your phone first. If the eSIM still doesn't appear, check in Settings whether the eSIM plan is still listed. Never delete the eSIM to 'reinstall' it, as the QR usually can't be reused — contact support instead.

👤 Account & contact

Do I need an account to buy an eSIM?+

Not required — you can check out as a guest (just an email to receive the eSIM). But an account lets you view your order history and QR codes any time.

I forgot my password — how do I sign back in?+

On the sign-in page, please contact support by email to regain access (self-service password reset is coming soon).

I need urgent help — where do I reach you?+

Message us on Facebook (TripWise.vn) or email us with your order number. Our support team will reply as soon as possible to get you connected.
